Sports are a billion-dollar industry that is a part of many cultures throughout the world. You will see millions of people traveling to the Olympics every few years and can just sit around the television on a Saturday afternoon with some friends to watch a football game. Football, or soccer is North America, is known as the world's sport. You will find children passing a ball around in North and South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, even homes in Maple Ontario with dreams of being the next David Beckham or Lionel Messi.
FC Dinaburg Daugavpils was founded in 1990 and played in Latvia's Daugavas Stadions stadium. It played in the Virsliga and Baltic Leagues until 2009 when it merged with FK Daugava. They now play in the Latvian First League, which is the second tier of football in the country and currently has ten teams. They won the Latvian Cup in 1991 and were the runners up in 2001.
BFC Daugava is the name of the new merged team and finished in the fourth spot at the end of the 2010 season. They played twenty-seven games and won sixteen of them. They were defeated in the semi-finals by SK Liepajas Metalurgs. The current coach is Sergei Pogodin and there are currently 29 players on the team.
